Bluebeam Revu 12 now prompts proactively to remove Untitled Viewports

This has been an issue for a while (and the source of about 30% of our technical support cases).  These “Untitled Viewports” that make it difficult/impossible to get accurate measurements from your PDF with Bluebeam Revu.  The good news is Bluebeam Revu 12 (and every version since) now prompts to remove Untitled Viewports.

Before Revu 12 was released, you’d calibrate your PDF, then you’d measure a distance, only to find that the distance was incorrect.  Sometimes the screen turned blue.  Then hopefully you’d find that there were these “Untitled Viewports” in the PDF that needed to be deleted before you could get accurate measurements.  In other words, you found out after calibrating that these trouble-making viewports were in your PDF.  Then you’d delete them, and start all over again.

Fast forward to February 25, 2014……and the release of Bluebeam Revu 12.  Now, when you open a PDF containing viewports, Revu will issue a notification window asking if you’d like to have them removed – awesome!

And why wouldn’t you want to delete these annoying viewports?  Just do it! You’ll be glad that you did.

But why are the viewports appearing in the first place? They keep showing up, and I am not creating them. Could this be related to the fact that I am publishing the PDF from AutoCAD structural plans? Even after I delete the viewports, they reappear while I am working with the file. Thanks.

Hi Luke, The viewports, after you delete them and save the PDF in Bluebeam Revu, should be gone for good. And yes, these Untitled Viewports are artifacts from AutoCAD files published to PDF. We’d be happy to take a look at one of your files to see if we get the same behavior. Let us know how we can help.

When i click on viewports in my drawing, I am unable to delete them. The “Clear all” button is grayed out. Why? and how can i fix this?

    • OBC on June 14, 2016 at 4:36 pm

      Hi Kat,
By chance are you accessing this particular PDF file in a Bluebeam Studio Project or Session? If you are, the ability to Clear All Viewports may be disabled.

  3. Caleb on July 31, 2017 at 5:41 pm

Before I knew what I was doing, I chose not to remove them, and checked the box to have it never show me the message again. Now I want to have it remove the viewports, how do I change that particular setting?

    • OBC on July 31, 2017 at 10:35 pm

Hi Caleb, You can bring that dialog box back by “Resetting Hidden Messages”. Details here

  4. Charles on October 22, 2017 at 11:51 pm

I have deleted the view ports and saved the document, but the viewports show back up when I start a studio session.

    • OBC on October 23, 2017 at 2:50 pm

      Hi Charles,
Can you tell us what version of Revu you are using?

  5. Drew Kratly on December 6, 2017 at 4:16 pm

Older version of Revu had a setting to automatically delete unwanted viewports when a doc was initially opened. Now I keep getting the dialog box.
Is there a way to set viewports to delete automatically?

    • OBC on December 6, 2017 at 4:27 pm

      Hi Drew,
Which version of Revu was deleting viewports automatically for you? Version 12 was the first version to notify the user of Untitled Viewports. Then it was a single click “Yes” to delete them. Not automatic, but still quick & easy.

I am using Bluebeam Revu 2017.

For some documents I am able to remove the Viewports or modify them. But there is one pdf document that does not let me. All the boxes are grey.

      Hi Jose,
We’d be happy to take a look at that particular PDF. Can you send it over to

  7. Brian on October 11, 2018 at 10:26 pm

I am using Bluebeam Revu 2018 and am having no success with any of the options presented in this blog. The dialog box does not appear when the document is opened, the option to clear Viewports is grayed out, and the “Reset Hidden Messages” option is grayed out.

    • OBC on October 16, 2018 at 6:52 pm

      Hi Brian,

Go ahead and open up the measure panel on the left side of your screen. If the measure tab (ruler icon) is not available, it may be turned off. You can turn this on in Revu 2018 by going to the Window menu option at the top of your screen, select panels then make sure measurements is selected (Alt+U will also open this up). Once in the measure panel, expand the viewports section then, you’ll see the option to clear all.

I have Bluebeam Revu Extreme 2018.3.4 I am unable to delete the view ports in a document as the clear all button is grayed out.

    • OBC on February 12, 2019 at 7:29 pm

Hi Jimy – Someone from our support team may have already reached out to you. We’re thinking that you have a read-only PDF, or this particular PDF is part of a Bluebeam Studio Project or Session.

  9. David Carlson on April 5, 2019 at 6:08 pm

During the inital start-up of Bluebeam after install, I requested to have the view-ports deleted as you suggested. I wish I hadn’t now, becuase it asks me if I want to save every document I open which is quite annoying. It must be doing this as the deletion of the viewports would be a legitimate change which then needs to be saved every time. Is there a way I can reverse my decision to have viewports deleted without having to uninstall & reinstall? Thanks.

    • OBC on April 8, 2019 at 4:55 pm

Hi David – If you Reset Settings, it’ll bring back the dialog box to reverse your decision.

  10. Aram on November 22, 2019 at 5:04 pm

So, after telling Revu to remove Untitled Viewports, and then checking the tick box [Do Not Show This Message Again], I found that I do in fact need it to keep the viewports. Is there a way to bring this dialogue back? Or maybe turn those Untitled Viewports back on? Some quick digging around in the settings and no familiar options seemed to stick out to me yet.

    • OBC on November 22, 2019 at 8:03 pm

Hi Aram – I’m assuming you are using Revu 2018 or 2019. Try this Preferences > General > Reset Hidden Messages (at the bottom of the options tab). This page is a few years old and was referring to version 12 or Bluebeam Revu.
